Microsoft Intune: what to verify before your first pilot
An Intune deployment should not begin with a large policy assignment. It begins by understanding devices, identities and business applications. A small pilot provides a safe way to assess unexpected effects before organization-wide deployment.
1. Inventory before enrollment
Identify domain-joined, Microsoft Entra joined and hybrid joined devices. Check Windows editions, relevant Intune licensing, enrollment limits and any existing MDM provider. Active Directory domain join alone does not mean an endpoint is managed by Intune.
- Confirm join state and enrollment readiness for each pilot PC
- Verify device/user groups and licenses
- Identify apps that depend on on-premises network access
2. Introduce policies in stages
Begin with basic configuration and application testing. Introduce compliance policies next and review actual status. Conditional Access should initially be evaluated cautiously: enforcement before devices are ready may prevent users from accessing their services.
- A limited and representative pilot group
- Clear monitoring for policy conflicts
- A way to reverse disruptive policy assignments
3. Treat BitLocker recovery as a requirement
Confirm device prerequisites and that recovery keys are backed up to the intended secure location. Practice a recovery workflow on a test device. An assigned encryption policy is not equivalent to verifying every drive is encrypted.
4. Plan updates and applications
Update rings need maintenance windows, reboot handling and monitoring. Application deployment needs reliable detection rules, dependency handling and validation from users.
- Test a business app in the pilot
- Monitor failures and document remediation
- Agree rollout criteria before expansion
5. Define pilot acceptance
A pilot succeeds when devices enroll correctly, applications work, compliance is understood and users retain access to critical resources. Document the design, exceptions, support procedures and staged rollout. That makes Intune an operational platform rather than simply a configuration console.
VALUE360 can scope a controlled Intune pilot and expand management once the operating model is validated in your own environment.

Implementation questions
Does this automatically affect our environment?
No. First verify whether the specific product, version and relevant configuration are deployed.
Is a security tool enough on its own?
No. Combine patching, restricted access, logging and tested backups.
